| Nature Lecture Series |
| A
monthly lecture series featuring conservation and environmental topics.
These programs are held on the third Thursday night of each month
at 7 p.m. in Price Hall. Free to the public. |
Our
Love-Hate Relationship with Willows and Cottonwoods will be Dr. Mac
Alford’s topic for the April lecture in the Nature Center’s
Nature Lecture series. Alford, Assistant Professor in the
University of Southern Mississippi, Department of Biology, is a
graduate of Mississippi College and, as a student, worked in the early
development of the Nature Center.
Although many people think of willows and cottonwoods as the source of
a cottony mess of seeds or clogged septic tanks, they also play many
positive roles for humanity, from serving as one of the original
sources of aspirin to preventing erosion. Willows and cottonwoods have
also intrigued biologists because they lack key flower parts and grow
rapidly enough for genetic studies of trees. Dr. Alford will speak
about these economic and biological uses, as well as introduce the
audience to all the species occurring locally.
Thursday, April 17, 2008, 7 p.m., Clinton Community Nature Center, 617
Dunton Road, Clinton, Mississippi. The public is invited to attend free
of charge (donations by nonmembers are encouraged) for more
